2015
June 11, 2015
Each weekend feels a bit less chilly than the one before it. Hopefully that bodes well for this coming Saturday and Sunday.
THE NEXT YACHT CLUB PARTY…………..is this weekend, Saturday evening, June 13, starting about 6:30 p.m., at Jeff Brakke’s, 1929 North Shore Drive. X Boat Parents, C Boaters and E Boaters are doing the hors d’oeuvres and helping with beverage service.
WATCH THE RACES………..the first edition of this season’s Watch The Races will be this Saturday, June 13. We tried this for the first time last year, and it worked pretty well. If you are interested in learning more about the (sometimes inscrutable) sport of sailboat racing, meet at the CLYC Clubhouse at 9:00 a.m. and head out to the race course in a motorboat with someone who knows what he or she is talking about when it comes to sailboat racing. If the weather isn’t cooperating, and the morning race is cancelled or postponed, your motorboat captain will let you know whether he or she will try it again at 1:00 p.m. for the afternoon races.
HAVE YOU BEEN FOLLOWING THE VOLVO AROUND THE WORLD OCEAN RACE?………..The 7 boats are on the second to the last leg of what has been an exciting around the world race in 65 foot one design offshore boats. One boat was totaled near Africa in the early legs when it hit a reef miles off the shoreline; another was dismasted in the frigid southern Pacific; nearly every boat broached, death rolled or Chinese jybed during the southern ocean leg. But the all-women boat is leading the current leg which ends in France……….and the tactician is none other than Sally Barkow, one of our fellow ILYA sailors. To see what has happened since the race began in October and to keep current for the final leg tune into www.volvooceanrace.com, which is an impressive website of the entire event.
