May 24, 2017

So, it appears we are going to skip spring altogether, and jump directly from winter into summer. I’m sure we’ve had weekends more miserable than last weekend, but I can’t remember one off the top of my head. What that means, of course, is that Memorial Day weekend will be a scramble for those of us (notice I said “us”) who have not quite finished our pre-season preparations.

MEMORIAL DAY REGATTA…….is this weekend, weather permitting. You should expect back-to-back races on Saturday. And, in case you’ve forgotten the club sailing schedule…………..MC, M17 and X fleets race at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning…………….E, C and Hobie fleets race at 2:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon……….all fleets race at 10:00 a.m. Sunday morning.

SPECTATOR BOATS…….will be a needed this weekend to keep the racers safe. The lake temperature is cooler than we would like it to be, so please come out to watch the races………and keep a lookout for any overturned sailboats.

MEMORIAL DAY………..is also a time for us to reflect on those who have gone before us and helped lay the foundation of the Yacht Club we know today. The former Commodores and active CLYC members we lost over the off season include: Mel Paulsen, Joe Craven, John Fieseler, Bill Wilson and Karl Langhart……..who I’m sure are all in a place where the breezes are pleasant and the sailing is smooth.

CLYC BOARD MEETING……….is set for Sunday, May 28, 1:30 p.m. at the Yacht Club.

THANK YOU……..to all who showed up and help clean up the Yacht Club on May 6. It was the biggest turnout I have seen in years. And we went through stuff that hadn’t been sorted in I don’t know how long. And, assuming the rain garden gets replanted tomorrow (May 24) as planned, another big thanks to those of you who volunteered to help make that happen.

DID ANYONE NOTICE…….that Clear Lake, Iowa made the Forbes list of “The 25 Cheapest Places To Travel This Summer”………..and that’s in the whole, entire world? Some of the other places on the list include Barbados, Antigua, St. Bart’s and the Norwegian fjords………….Hmmm………..well, whatever you think of it, I suppose until next year’s list comes out you can say, “Take that Okoboji, Minnetonka, Geneva, etc., etc., etc.”.

CLYC PARTY REMINDER……….Saturday, June 10, 6:30 p.m. at the Yacht Club. Social members bring the treats. Everyone bring your checkbooks, because the Sailing School will be holding a special fundraiser.

Later, Oz
