August 16, 2018

It was Groundhog Day all last weekend……….wake up Saturday morning, look out the window, see no wind, go back to bed……repeat on Sunday.  This has been the mantra all summer, and it’s not just Clear Lake……….the ILYA Championships being held this week at Lake Minnetonka are getting a dose of the blah breezes as well.

THE LAST CLYC PARTY OF THE REGULAR SEASON…………is this Saturday, August 18 at the Cooney residence (1605 North Shore Drive). Festivities commence at 6:30 p.m. MCs, M17s and Hobies will be bringing the hors d’oeuvres.

NO FRIDAY NIGHT SOCIAL………The “powers that be” have decided to cancel this week’s Friday Night Social, originally set for August 17. The Friday Night Socials have been experiments in promoting both sailing and the social side of the Yacht Club. This summer was a good test for when the event works well, and when it doesn’t work so well.  Now that we know, next summer should be even better.

THE MAKEUP DAD/MOM/LAD/LASS RACE……….has finally been rescheduled for Sunday, August 26 with a starting gun at 2:00 p.m.  I was beginning to get concerned that we might go an entire season without the X Boaters having an opportunity to embarrass their parents.  On the other hand, I’m pretty certain all of those parents have been diligently practicing their X Boat techniques for the extra 2 months since the race was originally scheduled……..in an effort to minimize the embarrassment.

ASSOCIATION FOR THE PRESERVATION OF CLEAR LAKE PICNIC REMINDER……….As detailed in last week’s newsletter, the annual APCL picnic is this Sunday, August 19, 5:00 p.m. at PM Park.  Food service starts at 5:30 p.m.  Tickets are $12.50 per person.  You can purchase tickets in advance by visiting www.clearproject.net/upcoming-events, or tickets will be available at the door.

BLOOPER AWARD NOMINATIONS………..Yesterday’s political primaries reminded me that it’s not only politicians who screw up………..sailors do too.  The difference is that politicians do it professionally, and sailors do it for free. The Keeper of the Bloopers, Stu Oltrogge, wants your nominations for the annual Blooper Award, to be voted on and presented at the Year End Banquet.  So, wrack your brain and recall any and all of the hilarious pratfalls your fellow CLYC members managed to accomplish this past season on or around our lake or other lakes.  Submit your nominations to Stu at clyciowa@gmail.com.
