Crow’s Nest 04/23/20

April 23, 2020

With so much negativity in the news lately I think we should start off with a feel-good sailing story…

As the new Editor of our renowned Crow’s Nest I would like to use my “Powers” to acknowledge young Jude Sorenson for being the most ambitious sailor of 2020!  He was out on the lake in his Opti in March, yes March, before the official Ice Out! Thanks, Jude, for lifting our spirits!  It is always refreshing to see the excitement in our youth sailors.  It looks as though he has lit a fire, as the docks, lifts and boats are going in quickly.
Registrations are pouring in just about as fast as the docks and hoists are going in the lake.  The water is a bath like 45 degrees…  The extended forecast is at least looking seasonal for temperatures so it should be right around normal (just above frigid) for the Memorial Day Regatta. As of right now our schedules, both racing and social are on track, however, still subject to change…  Racing begins with the Memorial Day Regatta on May 23rd.  The first social event is scheduled for June 13th, followed by July 18th, August 8th and finally the Annual Awards Ceremony on September 6th.  Again, please note these dates are tentative and subject to any restrictions in place at the time. I will continue to keep you up to date with the latest information.
Don’t forget the “Outdoor Only Clean-up Day” on May 2nd.  If you’re able and would like to contribute, send off an email to Margaret Oz – inremoz@aol.com  she will have all the particulars available for you.  Please remember this is outdoors only and the clubhouse facilities will be unavailable for use.

* Andi Tisor has a message from the Sailing Center: *

Clear Lake Sailing Center registration is open.  We understand that right now, is very hard to plan for summer.  We have planned a summer schedule but know that we may need to make adjustments.

We are respectfully waiting to hear what decisions the Governor of Iowa makes, each week, and are also working with other sailing programs, through the ILYA (Inland Lake Yachting Association.)

The one thing I would like to ask…

If you have intentions of registering for any of our sailing programs if we could ask you to “register now” so we can plan.  Staff, schedules, spacing, potentially limiting class sizes…

I am the Treasurer, and I process payments on my end.  They are NOT processed online.

What we would like to do is receive registrations, for planning, and then at the end of May and beginning of June, we will call or email to verify prior to processing any payments.

Register now/Pay later.

Please note, possible “Distance Learning” options:

We will be offering STEM classes; these could be offered online, if needed.  We could teach “Racers” on the water, complimented with online “chalk talk.”

We hope to see you all on the water soon.

Be safe, be well.

Regatta Co-chairs Mark Tesar and Stu Oltrogge advise us the MCSA Masters Nationals is still a go currently. Those dates again are June 18th – June 21st. Be ready to help if you’re able, volunteers are sure to be needed in different areas. Further information will be brought as it becomes available.

I did miss one small detail in my previous newsletter: Fleet Captains…  They’re as follows:  E Fleet – Mark Tesar, C Fleet – Steve Swift, MC Fleet – Brad Oz, M17 Fleet – Dave Atkinson, Hobie Fleet – Steve Brewer.  If you were not aware of your position as Fleet Captain, you’ve officially been put on notice.  Make sure your respective parties are entertaining as well as adherent to any social restrictions!

Do not forget about registrations! May 22nd will be here before you know it. You’re on a capable device reading this newsletter right now, go ahead and register now if you haven’t already!

Until next time!

Stay in the clear air
