Crow’s Nest 08/18/22

Wow! What a fantastic party held by the Ebeling’s last Saturday! Enough thanks for all the effort they put into hosting and the hospitality they displayed.  Commodore Mike Starbeck’s idea of “Cheeseburgers in Paradise” certainly came full circle as the food, beverage and camaraderie was beyond all expectation! Thank you Mark and Kristin for hosting and all of those who helped at the event.

As everyone should be aware, Leif Lundberg participated in the X Blue Chip last week at Cedar Lake Yacht Club in Wisconsin.  29 boats full of talent showed up with guns blazing… The first two races of the regatta were solid, a 9th and 10th. The conditions turned very challenging for the fleet and Leif was no exception taking finishes of 21st and 20th which as it turned out were the final races of the regatta. A 15th overall finish in the regatta… Certainly a fantastic result at the ultra competitive event!

Almost… We almost completed a full schedule of racing this weekend…The X, MC and E fleets completed 3 of 4 scheduled races; I guess that’s better than many other weekends! Just two weekends of Championship racing remain for the 2022 season and the scores are tight. The MC fleet is down to a two horse race between the brothers, Mark and Todd Tesar.  Three boats still have a shot at the E Fleet Championship and the X Fleet is also down to a three boat sprint to the finish. Check out the complete scores here: CLYC Scores

Leif Lundberg is leading the X fleet with Jude Sorensen and Elle Ebeling tied for second just a short margin behind.  Jude made his move last weekend, taking bullets in all three races, Finley Nyhus had a solid weekend with a 4, 2, 2 as did Brady Amble with a 3, 4, 3. What happens when one skipper is gone and another is injured (Georgia, we hope you get better soon!)…? You put the two crews in a boat and they trade off skippering races!  Avery Tidrick and Charlotte Tisor sailed the Z-10 on Sunday and did quite well! The duo of crews showed their mettle finishing with a 3,4 on Sunday!  It seems we have a great deal of talent in our younger sailors; that’s fantastic news for our club!  With any luck our numbers will continue to grow in the X boat fleet!

The behavior of the MC fleet was “over the line” Saturday morning!  A wind shift combined with an overly eager fleet caused a general recall, followed by a postponement for a course change, putting the fleets behind the clock and were able to complete just one race. Todd Tesar won that race followed by Mark Tesar and Stu Oltrogge.  Sunday dawned with more breeze than forecast, albeit still rather shifty!  Two races were completed with Mark Tesar winning race 1 over Dan Allen and Todd Tesar.  Race 2 was a slightly milder wind, yet just as shifty.  Dan Allen won race 2 with Mark Tesar in second and Todd Tesar in 3rd.

Saturday’s E fleet races featured a very nice breeze; fairly steady from the NW with a velocity between 12-15 mph with some bigger puffs.  Race 1 was very competitive before Mark Tesar and team broke away; Dan Allen and team took second with Brad Price in 3rd.  Race 2 was just as tight; this time, however, Brad Price and the Z-9 crew kept the pedal down and managed to stay in front for the win with Dan Allen just edging out Mark Tesar at the finish line for second.  Hardly any of the wind from Sunday morning was left for the afternoon; only two E boats decided to go out and play in the light and shifty breezes.  By the end of the excruciating race, Mark Tesar and team wore down Eric Protzman and managed to squeak out a victory.

This week in regatta news features a large event over in Wisconsin.  The 2022 ILYA Championships are being held at Lake Geneva starting Wednesday night (last night).  Brad Price and Team Goose start racing in the E fleet this morning; Mart, Todd and Stu start their MC racing this afternoon at 14:00.  If you would like to follow the scores, you can do so here:  2022 Inland Champs Results

We have two other very large regattas coming up in the next month… The E Scow National Championship makes it’s way back toward us this year being held at Minnetonka Yacht Club, September 8th – 11th.  A couple weeks later is the MC National Championship making it’s first appearance on the East Coast; Lavallette Yacht Club will play host, September 22nd – 25th.  Local scuttlebutt indicates we have several boats who plan to attend each regatta.  Of course I’ll provide more information on that at a later time…

Several reminders of upcoming events:  This Sunday at 1:30pm is another Board Meeting; Commodore Mike Starbeck has sent out an invitation to the meeting along with an agenda and previous meeting notes.  Board members, please plan to attend.  The E Fleet Party will be held at the Cooney residence on South Shore Dr, Friday, August 26th starting at 6:30pm.  Skippers, you need to RSVP Wil Cooney by Tuesday 8/22 with the number of attendees from your boat, please don’t forget!  RSVP @ 641-five eight three-1237.  The MC Fleet party will be Saturday, August 27th starting at 6:30pm.  Fleet Captain Jake Sorensen is still sorting out the finer details of the evening; he promises he will have those for me next week!

Stu Oltrogge’s Inbox is feeling neglected…The Blooper nominations and his typical Spam should be overwhelming his allowed storage space; sadly the Spam is the only portion doing it’s job!  Get those nominations of folly and misfortune to Stu soon!  clyciowa@gmail.com

As we near the end of the season, most of us are dreading the inevitability of having to store our boats… Here’s another option; just order a new one and sell your old one!?  No storage, new boat, sounds like a great deal! We have buyers for boats, especially MCs right here in Clear Lake; if you’re considering an upgrade please let me know and I’ll get it listed in the Crows Nest, Stu will put it on the website. It won’t take long to sell and Melges can get boats built, especially an MC.  Anything you would like listed for sale, please let me know.  Dan Allen dsallen@cltel.net

A complete regatta wrapup, local racing update and further details regarding parties will be included next week!  Until then friends…

Stay in the Clear Air
