It’s regatta season………and the regattas have been coming hot and heavy. We sent several of our X Boaters and Opti Sailors to Lake Delavan for X Championships and Optimist Championships. Some MCs trekked to Cedar Lake for MC Masters. Every fleet was represented at last weekend’s Interlake Regatta at White Bear Lake (where, for the first time in memory, there were zero races….because there was zero wind). Next stop is Lake Geneva for the ILYA Championships. And then it starts to wind down.

YACHT CLUB PARTY THIS WEEKEND……..My apologies for not giving you the early party warning to which you’ve become accustomed. But the Commodore and his wife (that would be Jaime and Lori Zachar) are hosting the next CLYC party this Saturday, August 12 starting at 6:30 p.m. The venue is their home at 1125 South Shore Drive. Hors d’oeuvres are the responsibility of the MC, M17 and Hobie Fleets.

LAKE ASSOCIATION PICNIC……..Not to be outdone by the Yacht Club, the Association for the Preservation of Clear Lake is inviting everyone to its Annual Picnic this Sunday, August 13, 5 p.m. at P.M. Park. $10 at the door will get you a meal of pulled pork sandwich and other goodies, a host of speakers including DNR Deputy Director Bruce Trautman, Iowa DNR Fisheries Biologist Scott Grummer, CLEAR Project Coordinator Jim Sholly, and a program covering updates on water quality funding and priorities, fisheries, watershed improvements, water quality monitoring and the CLEAR project. Plus you’ll have a chance to ask the experts your burning questions…….all for a measly $10.

YACHT CLUB BUILDING ADDITON MEETING……Also on Sunday, August 13, at 1:00 p.m. at the Yacht Club, the Sailing School is holding a meeting to discuss a building addition that will primarily deal with better storage of the Sailing School’s Optimist fleet. If you would like to be involved or have any ideas you are itching to share, please make a point of attending.

OLD SAILS AVAILABLE FOR THE TAKING……..The Sailing School has quite a few old sails that they are willing to part with. I assume these are mostly X Boat sails and maybe a few Opti sails. If you have a need for some used Dacron, stop by the Yacht Club at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 13.

OLD X BOAT MASTS FOR FREE………Also Dave Atkinson has accumulated a batch of old X Boat masts. These are not suitable for racing, but there are lots of other uses for aluminum extrusions (i.e. flag poles, fence posts, and…….uhhh……..other stuff). If you have a need, call Dave at 970-210-9290, and he’ll be happy to help.

ALUMNI SHOUT OUT………..Many of you remember the Lubben family, who were active members of the CLYC for years, and who still maintain their Yacht Club membership. Anyway, Kara Lubben now lives in Seattle and her two kids, Abbie and Parker, are becoming hot sailors out there. Both are sailing nationally……and Abbie just won the US Sailing Junior Singlehanded Champs in Galveston Bay, Texas a couple weeks ago, then hopped over to the Netherlands to do some more racing……….and to think, it all started here……sigh.

Later, Oz
